Emotional Support

Are you struggling with sight loss or any emotional personal difficulties?

You are not alone. There are three ways we can help. We offer one-to-one counselling; group support sessions; and our Telephone Sight Loss Support Service.

One-to-one counselling

Our counsellor Joy Hawitt works with us to provide confidential counselling therapy to those who need emotional support.

If you are struggling to come to terms with sight loss or changes in your vision, counselling can offer a safe and calm space to talk things through. Joy works with individuals to explore emotions around diagnosis, family impact, work life, and planning for the future.

  • Sessions take place at Ashville Lodge.
  • Appointments available on Tuesdays and Wednesdays (with more to follow depending on demand).
  • Joy offers Person-Centred Therapy – a client-led, talking therapy that adapts to your individual needs

As a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), Joy follows strict ethical guidelines and offers a respectful, trusting, and empathetic environment for every client.

Group support sessions

We provide group emotional support sessions in a safe and confidential environment. There are separate groups for men and women; the men’s group is on Tuesday from 11am – 1pm, and the women’s group is on Wednesday from 1 – 2.30pm.

Telephone Sight Loss Support Service

If you’re feeling overwhelmed or struggling to adjust to sight loss, you’re not alone. Through our Telephone Sight Loss Support Service, we can connect you with one of our trained volunteers who have lived experience of sight loss. They understand the emotional and practical challenges and can offer friendly, one-to-one peer support. Whether you just need someone to talk to or want advice on coping strategies, we’re here to listen and help.
